Facing History and Ourselves: Sowing Change Inquiry: The Delano Grape Strike and Boycott
Wednesday March 11, 2026 9:00am - 3:00pm CDT
Learn about building solidarity in a movement for change with our new resource, Sowing Change Inquiry: The Delano Grape Strike and Boycott.

This workshop will introduce 6th-12th grade humanities teachers to Facing History’s new unit, Sowing Change Inquiry: The Delano Grape Strike and Boycott. While leaders play an important role in the success of social movements, the collective efforts behind social change are often overlooked. Understanding the history of the California farm worker movement that emerged during the Delano grape strike (1965-1970) helps students reflect on the power of collective action and interethnic solidarity, demonstrated by Mexican and Filipino laborers, in enacting transformative social change.
As a result of participating in this workshop you will:

● Examine the various strategies that farmworkers used to foster unity amongst themselves
during the Delano grape strike in the 1960s

● Explore the the missed opportunities for solidarity within a diverse movement for justice

● Experience Facing History’s approach to understanding history and making connections to
civic agency and participation

● Consider how this often untold history can support implementation of the Illinois Teaching
Equitable Asian American Community History Act (TEAACH Act)
