Wednesday November 5, 2025 9:00am - 3:00pm CST

● Explore two pivotal moments in US history and the continued legacy of racial
violence in the United States

● Examine ways that activists have pushed for racial justice

● Reflect upon how this history connects with student and community identities and

Inclusion and Exclusion: Exploring Angel Island Immigration Station
Thursday November 6, 2025 9:00am - 3:00pm CST
This workshop explores themes of exclusion and membership, featuring our new Angel
Island Immigration Station inquiry.

This interactive workshop will engage participants in learning about Angel Island
Immigration Station to help them think critically about the concept of borders—not simply
geographic borders, but the social, economic, and political boundaries erected throughout
US history to separate “in” groups from “out” groups." The C3-style inquiry on Angel Island is part of Facing History's larger US History Curriculum Collection.

Please consider registering for the corresponding Resisting Hatred: Lessons from the
Murder of Emmett Till and Japanese American Incarceration workshop on November 5th.
Participants are encouraged to attend both workshops prior to implementing the three
inquiries in their classroom.

In this workshop you will:

● Apply Facing History’s unique methodology in order to explore history and literature
through themes of identity, choices, justice, and civic participation

● Learn a range of teaching strategies for helping students process emotionally
powerful histories

● Learn a new way of structuring curriculum to help students connect history to their
own lives

Facing History and Ourselves: Holocaust and Human Behavior
Wednesday January 14, 2026 9:00am - 3:00pm CST
In this workshop, participants will study the fragility of democracy in Weimar Germany, the ensuing Holocaust, and the legacies of this history through an in-depth case study.

In today’s global climate, the urgency of sustaining democratic societies that are pluralistic,
open, and resilient to violence is more pressing than ever. Facing History’s in-depth case
study examines the fragility of democracy in Weimar Germany, the ensuing Holocaust, and
the legacies of this history. Studying the Holocaust and Human Behavior case study allows
students to wrestle with profound moral questions raised by this history while fostering
their skills in ethical and moral reasoning, critical analysis, empathy, and civic
engagement—all of which are critical habits of mind for sustaining democracy.

As a participant in this workshop you will:

● Learn current scholarship on the history of the Holocaust and new research focused on
human behavior, group dynamics, and bias.

● Increase their ability to facilitate respectful classroom discussions on difficult issues such as racism, antisemitism, and other forms of exclusion in a way that invites personal reflection and critical analysis.

● Learn a new way of structuring curriculum to help students connect history to their own lives and the choices they make.

● Engage with classroom-ready multimedia resources and learn how to build a customized
unit that meets your curriculum objectives.

● Discover new teaching strategies that help students interrogate text, think critically, and
discuss controversial issues respectfully.

Facing History and Ourselves: Sowing Change Inquiry: The Delano Grape Strike and Boycott
Wednesday March 11, 2026 9:00am - 3:00pm CDT
Learn about building solidarity in a movement for change with our new resource, Sowing Change Inquiry: The Delano Grape Strike and Boycott.

This workshop will introduce 6th-12th grade humanities teachers to Facing History’s new unit, Sowing Change Inquiry: The Delano Grape Strike and Boycott. While leaders play an important role in the success of social movements, the collective efforts behind social change are often overlooked. Understanding the history of the California farm worker movement that emerged during the Delano grape strike (1965-1970) helps students reflect on the power of collective action and interethnic solidarity, demonstrated by Mexican and Filipino laborers, in enacting transformative social change.
As a result of participating in this workshop you will:

● Examine the various strategies that farmworkers used to foster unity amongst themselves
during the Delano grape strike in the 1960s

● Explore the the missed opportunities for solidarity within a diverse movement for justice

● Experience Facing History’s approach to understanding history and making connections to
civic agency and participation

● Consider how this often untold history can support implementation of the Illinois Teaching
Equitable Asian American Community History Act (TEAACH Act)
